There are places in the world that don’t just inspire–they imprint. For Design Solutions Founder and CEO, Luciana Fragali, her recent travels through Italy weren’t intended as a design-focused trip. Yet the influence was undeniable. From Florence to Capri, she encountered spaces that reinforced why thoughtful design transcends the visual – it becomes deeply experiential. “I always return from Europe with a renewed sense of inspiration,” Fragali says. “Italy, especially, stirs something in me. I dream of clients who invite us to create spaces with true individuality, never cookie-cutter solutions.”

A Villa in Capri, A Vision for the Future

Though every corner of Italy offered its own charm, it was a private villa in Capri that most captured Luciana’s imagination. Nestled away from the center of the island, the villa gave her a rare glimpse into local life. Owned by an interior designer from Monte Carlo, the home overlooked the iconic Faraglioni rocks and featured a serene turquoise palette with hand-laid mosaic floors.

“It was a triplex with perhaps the most extraordinary view I’ve ever encountered,” she recalls. “Every corner felt intentional—small, exquisite details at every turn. I could have happily stayed there for half the year.” More than the architecture or furnishings, it was the overall atmosphere that stayed with her. The quiet confidence of the space, its relationship to the sea, and the way it invited slow living created a sense of harmony she’s eager to translate into future projects.

Color, Contrast, and the Courage to Be Bold

What struck her most was Italy’s fearless embrace of color—unapologetic, layered, and deeply confident. Whether in richly painted ceilings, tiled floors, or the natural hues of the Amalfi coast, boldness was ever-present but never overpowering. “Earthy tones stood out, but what really inspired me was how freely colors were mixed,” Luciana says. “There’s a confidence to it that feels refined, not loud.”

Color wasn’t reserved for walls or upholstery. In several spaces, ceilings became canvases, and lighting fixtures or hardware served as sculptural statements. For Luciana, these ideas sparked a renewed interest in using color in unexpected places and pushing beyond conventional palettes.

On Architecture, Moldings, and Moving Beyond Minimalism

Italy also deepened her appreciation for architectural detail, particularly the interplay of classical moldings within contemporary settings. “I’m really appreciating moldings mixed with modern design right now,” Fragali says. “Minimalism can be beautiful, but in many cases, it’s just budget-driven. I’m ready to move past that.”

Ceilings, too, played an essential role in creating visually complete spaces. Many were painted, papered, or treated with texture—finishes that added a sense of intention and personality. “A plain white ceiling can feel unfinished,” she notes. “There’s something about giving the ceiling character that transforms the room.”

The architecture extended seamlessly outdoors as well. From boutiques to cafes, the connection between interior and exterior spaces felt effortless. “I love how many places in Italy are open to the outdoors,” Luciana says. “Little gardens with people sipping Aperol Spritz, moments of pause built into the landscape. I miss that here, especially in the summer.”

Materials That Tell a Story

While most of the materials she encountered weren’t new, the way they were used felt fresh and inventive. Venetian plaster, metal accents, and mosaic floors were all present, but never predictable. “Metals are really having a moment, and I saw some pieces that inspired me to explore new ways of integrating them into our designs,” she says.

The craftsmanship was apparent throughout, even without formal visits to ateliers. Every detail, from hardware to millwork, was carefully considered and thoughtfully placed—something Luciana is determined to carry into her own work.

Creating Emotionally Intelligent Spaces

In nearly every space she experienced, Luciana noticed a sophisticated blend of historical and contemporary design. Sleek lighting paired with centuries-old stone, bold furnishings set against timeworn textures. The result was a feeling of warmth and visual interest that went beyond aesthetics. “That combination of history and modern design creates a kind of visual tension that’s really beautiful,” she says. “It makes a space feel alive.”

She hopes to bring more of that richness into her South Florida projects. Though regional tastes often lean safer or more neutral, Luciana believes there is a growing openness to the kinds of layered, personality-driven interiors she’s envisioning.

Channeling Capri

What Luciana brings back from Italy is more than inspiration, it’s a renewed design ethos. The villa in Capri, the island’s quiet energy, and the artistry embedded in daily life underscored what makes a space truly resonate. “Every trip leaves an imprint,” she reflects. “But this one reminded me how essential it is for each project to feel distinct and deeply personal.”

What she carries forward is not a palette or a trend, but a perspective: one that values individuality, rejects repetition, and finds elegance in the unexpected.
