Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Miami’s exclusive Ponce-Davis neighborhood, a hidden gem lies beneath the protective canopy of a 400-year-old banyan tree, where modern design meets a heartfelt narrative. Luciana Fragali, one of Miami’s most sought-after interior designers, has transformed this residence into a tropical modern oasis, all while keeping the vision of its original architect, Cesar Molina, known for his contemporary Balinese-style homes. As we delve into this project, we explore how a serendipitous encounter and a commitment to craftsmanship turned a spec home into a sanctuary.

The Vision: A House Rooted in Nature

Fragali’s journey began in the fall of 2020 when she and her husband, David, stumbled upon a construction site while cycling through their neighborhood. One look at the majestic banyan tree sprawled conspicuously in the back corner of the lot sparked a creative vision for a home where nature and modern design could live in harmony. Positioned on a 14,547-square-foot lot, the home would ultimately grow into a 6,000-square-foot retreat that celebrates both the landscape and Fragali’s unique design sensibilities.

“The moment I saw that tree, I knew I had to have this house,” Fragali reflects. “It felt like the right place at the right time.”

Upon discovering that the property was not on the market, the couple contacted the developer. They learned it was a spec home, being constructed under the design direction of one of her favorite architects, Cesar Molina. Just a week later, as luck would have it, the couple managed to seal the deal on the home, which was still in its early construction stages.

“We had the freedom to design and choose all the finishes without the constraints of a completed build,” she shares.

The couple seized the opportunity to shape a living space that resonated with their lifestyle and values.

Designing with Purpose: Craftsmanship & Artistry

With unfettered creative freedom, Fragali’s design approach came to life, rooted in her connection to nature, her love for art, and her family’s practical needs. As a mother of two, she envisioned a home that would balance functionality and beauty—one that invites comfort and playfulness without sacrificing elegance. This philosophy is evident in a unique layout where living spaces flow seamlessly into one another yet create moments of privacy.

“I believe in creating spaces that allow my children to express themselves, but with respect,” she explains.

In Luciana Fragali’s design, the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces is seamlessly intertwined, creating an expansive sanctuary that invites nature into everyday life. As you step through the oversized custom swivel door flanked by majestic columns of cut coral stone, the home’s essence unfolds. Inside, the foyer reveals not just the artistry of the space but also a sense of harmony that extends beyond its walls.

Upon entering the space, the custom-made pink onyx table commands attention as one of the first focal points, exuding a sense of elegance and warmth. Its unique veining and rich hues create an inviting atmosphere that sets the tone for the home. Above, the Flock of Light Suspension Light chandelier by Moooi casts a soft, enchanting glow, reminiscent of glistening raindrops, enhancing the ambiance of the dining area. The interplay of textures and colors throughout the entrance not only captivates the eye but also seamlessly integrates with the home’s overall design philosophy, reflecting a curated aesthetic that is both modern and timeless.

“It’s not just about functionality; it’s about creating emotions.”

Beneath a gracefully designed staircase, Jade, an ethereal bronze sculpture by Bruno Catalano, captivates with its intricate, pierced structure that hints at the verdant foliage behind it. This stunning artwork finds its companions in three-dimensional wall hangings from Fragali’s design studio, together weaving a narrative of artistry and surrealism.

In the kitchen, durable yet elegant finishes create a space that camouflages wear and tear through subtle patterns. Featuring a sophisticated matte lacquered gray and walnut wood palette, a Natori Azul polished marble makes a bold statement on the waterfall island, countertops, and backsplash.

“People often worry about stains on marble, but I see it as a sign of life,” Fragali remarks with a playful smile.

Custom cabinetry offers streamlined storage solutions, while a trio of lavender Louis Poulsen pendant lights adds a whimsical pop of color above the island, complemented by Jader Almeida counter stools that seamlessly continue the modern aesthetic.

In the family room, a plush beige Baxter sofa, a Sergio Rodrigues Moleca chair and ottoman, and Minotti chairs create a cozy gathering space, perfect for watching soccer games on the oversized television—a family favorite. A vibrant commissioned artwork by Abraham Palatnik hovers above an acrylic console table designed by Fragali’s own Design Solutions studio, infusing the space with personal significance. A Minotti area rug underfoot adds texture, tying the room together in harmony.

Along with the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the home, which invite the outdoors boldly into every room in an unmissable manner, nature’s echoes can be found through the most intricate details within the abode. Here, the boundaries blur, creating a cohesive environment where design and nature coexist beautifully.

“What I love about this house is that anywhere you are inside, you feel like you are outside.”

Stepping outside through the expansive sliding glass doors, you’re met with a breathtaking view of the lush gardens and shimmering pool, along with an inviting sense of tranquility that permeates the atmosphere. This serene backdrop is punctuated by the larger-than-life figure that started it all: the ancient banyan tree, which stands as a majestic centerpiece to the outdoor living space.

The outdoor loggia, crowned with an illuminated Brazilian chestnut ceiling, is a chic retreat furnished with a modern dining table and lounge seating from B&B Italia. The space is thoughtfully curated with layers of tactile function; a textural area rug from Design Solutions reflects the rattan elements of the seating, bringing a subtle tropical feel to the laid-back gathering area.

For Fragali, this home is not merely a structure; it’s a canvas for memories and a reflection of her journey as a designer.

“Designing for myself is a challenge; what I like today may not resonate tomorrow. The sky’s the limit, and that responsibility weighs heavily on me,” she admits.

The outcome is a captivating fusion of modern aesthetics and profound personal significance, reflecting the layers of creativity and intention behind each design choice. As the banyan tree continues to thrive, it symbolizes the enduring legacy of a home lovingly crafted, where every element tells a story. This space is not just a residence; it’s a sanctuary that embodies the spirit of its creator, blossoming with love, creativity, and a hint of magic that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

With love
