While the year may have just started, we’re already looking towards the future with the top forecasted interior design trends of 2022. Despite just being a couple months in, we’re already seeing an exciting, new horizon shaping before us, with some interesting trends challenging the status quo of interior design and décor. Don’t get us wrong, great taste can be timeless, but keeping an eye on the rising trends is the best way to spark your own inspiration—whether you’re looking to make some quick updates to your current space, or if you’re starting from scratch with a renovation or new build.
This year, it would seem that personal style will reign supreme, with a healthy focus on authenticity, sustainability, and personality. Guiding the way are trends that encompass these themes and can help you elevate your home without sacrificing its uniqueness. Here’s a look at exactly what those trends are and how we believe designers will incorporate them into their projects.
Interior design color trends in 2022
When it comes to interior design color trends, 2022 will most likely see big, bright hues at home.
The more time that we spend at home, the more important it becomes to let go of “safe” design choices and take a risk on bolder elements that speak to our soul as much as our design aesthetic. We’re not likely to see neutrals going anywhere any time soon, but in 2022, we are seeing a resurgence of appreciation for colorful home interiors—from paint colors to wallpaper to furniture to cabinets, and everything in between.
Trending color palettes include jewel tones, pastels, and earthy hues like mushroom, terracotta, and oatmeal. Expect to see plenty of warm blues and greens too, as well as unexpected pops of pinks, reds, yellow, and orange. There are still plenty of neutrals balancing it all out, but this is definitely the year to stop being afraid of color and start using it to breathe more life into your home.
Other major trends in home décor
It’s not just color that’s taking center stage. Check out some of these other interior design trends for 2022 and discover what else is guiding this year’s design decisions.
- Multipurpose spaces
In the past couple of years we’ve come to rely on our homes for a lot. But just because many people suddenly had the need for a home office or gym doesn’t mean the extra square footage appeared out of nowhere overnight. The solution? Smart and savvy multipurpose use of existing spaces, with design-forward solutions that seamlessly adapt to meet our everyday needs. And now in 2022, we’ve come a long way in our understanding of how to create flexible spaces that don’t sacrifice on style, and the need—and desire—for them isn’t going anywhere.
- Vintage and sustainable design
The interior design decisions we make have an impact that goes beyond our own four walls. We’ve learned a lot about the toll that mass-produced furniture and décor takes on the environment, and we’ve also seen firsthand what disruptions in the supply chain can do to our ability to source what we need. For these and other reasons, 2022 is all about repurposing, upcycling, and antiques, celebrating one-of-a-kind pieces and shopping vintage so we fill our homes with things we really love—instead of just things that fit the bill at the time.
- Mix and match materials
Of the various kitchen interior design trends 2022 has brought to the forefront, one of the most thrilling is definitely the blending together of different materials into one cohesive space. Mixed metals are more than at home in modern kitchens, as is the mixing and matching of natural materials such as quartz, marble, and butcher block. It’s a nice change from the cookie-cutter, all-white kitchens of years past, with a lot more room to express individual personality and add in lux elements when and where they make sense.
